How To Play

Gou Ninja is a game that uses text-to-speech to challenege number listening comprehension in Japanese.

When you start the game, a random number will be generated and read aloud to you. If you are using units, a unit may be attached to the number. This is important, because in Japanese, the unit can change the reading of the number!

After the number is read, you will have 5 seconds to type in the number that was read to you. You don't need to input the unit, just the number! Simply type in the number, and press Enter.

If you run out of time, the number will be repeated (depending on the difficulty). When you run out of repeats or get the number correct, the game will progress to the next question. This cycle repeats until the selected number of questions has been completed.

As you progress, the game tracks your correct answers and response time, and uses these to calculate a score. Aim to respond quickly and get the highest score!

There is also a "Learning Mode," which slows the speech, disables scoring, and allows for unlimited manual repeats. This should help beginner learners ease in to the experience. Contrast this with Hard mode, which reads at full speed with no repeats (a lot more similar to encountering number listening in real life)!

Keep practicing, and work your way up the difficulty levels. Pretty soon, you too will be a Gou Ninja!
